not sure what cost is to have it rebuilt usually do my own.
I'd try to get it running first see how it runs. Parts are still available and they are an
easy rebuild.
biggest cost would be new piston, connecting rods, valves if needed.
couple hundred if those parts are needed.
Ebay has some on there from time to time but watch what your buying

I'm in the process of rebuilding my K181 as well and got a pretty complete rebuild kit on ebay. It was $139 and came with a complete gasket set, new piston, piston pin, rings, rod and cap, exhaust valve, main bearings, oil seals, float needle and seat, ignition points, and spark plug. Overall not a bad deal and had almost all the parts I needed except for an intake valve which I got separately. These are all aftermarket but I'd say of decent quality. As Kster526 mentioned parts for Kohler K181s are readily available and many OEM Kohler parts if you don't mind the higher price of factory parts. Like he also mentions, the K181 is an easy one to rebuild. Brian Miller's website, gardentractorpullingtips.com has a wealth of rebuilding as well as hop up info, engine parts, and also offers rebuild services. You can download a free factory Kohler K181 engine service manual as well.
