What year did John Deere change the rear on the jd 140? Is it a Sundstrand on both the older and newer rear? I always hear people mention if the John Deere 140 has a new style or old style rear but I never knew the differences between them. Which one is the better unit to have?

The Sunstrand transmission was used in the 1968 through mid 1970 140 models. The newer transmissions were used on the later 1970 through 1974 140's, as well as the 1970 & 1971 120's.

As far as which type was better, I'd have to say the later transmissions. The Sunstrands were good, but finding replacement parts for them if something broke, is getting to be almost impossible. However, if you find a 140 at a decent price, I wouldn't turn down either transmission, as the 140's are very nice machines.

I think the easiest way to tell them apart is the older rear has disk brakes where the newer rear has drum brakes. The newer rear looked more like an automotive rear w/a pumpkin.

I think the newer rears are probably better. The older rears had issues with the axle key slot breaking.

Troy has the years covered.
