I've had both the 260 and 265 for a six months now. The 260 I got for free helping a friend clean up lot. The fc540 was stuck and the gear box is totally rusted. Looks like tractor was under water. The 265 I picked up for 100.00 no motor and no hood. Plan was to free up the 540 and run it on the 265. As luck will have it, I broke a ring trying. The carb junk. So it's taken four months now to find another fc540. I found a JD 185 running and some what driving for 80.00. OP had changed the hydro filter and fluid, but used wrong oil and blew out most of the seals. So here's the problem, I got the 185's motor on the 265, drive belt on but seems the length of the crankshaft is shorter by close to an inch, maybe 3/4". The pto clutches are different. The 185 clutch is also not as tall as the one from the 260. If I use the clutch from the 185, it puts it at just about an inch higher under the tractor. Will this throw off the angle of the deck belt on the pto pulley to much? Will it cause issues with the belt coming off or shredding it? I had the clutch from the 260 on the crank, but can only get about 5 threads of the crank bolt into the crank. Don't feel this is enough threads into the crank.
