Question: I saved this picture off the ole inter web, the owner says that it’s a 74 140. The pic shows a skid plate under the pump/rear end.
Here’s the question: My 72 does not have this, should it??

This is not on the JD parts site (at least I didn’t find it) and I looked thru the service manual to see if it showed in any pictures, it did not.
Should my 72 have it or did JD add this to 73 or 74 models?
Or is it home made?

They are original, Most have been removed though. I think 1971-1974's all had them originally.

The only 140 I currently own is a 1968 so it doesn't have one. My Dad owned a 1974 140 years ago that still had one on it.

Does anyone have a good fix for loose front axle and spindles that doesn’t require a machine shop?
72’ 140s do not have spindle bushings. I don’t know what JD was thinking.

Been tinkering on the 140 throughout the winter. I was able to remove the throttle & choke knobs without damage.

So, I tackled that nasty hole that someone hacked in the dash.

Cut a patch out of steel that was just a whisker thinner than the dash. (It’s what I had.)

Welded it in…

And finished it off.

Looks a bit better… IMO.

Also, removed the rest of the steering components and front axle.

I removed the hydraulic hose…

and bent up a new steel line for it. (Needs paint still.)

Cleaned up the engine bay and painted it.

The fender pan had some cracks in the sheet metal, above the 3 pt notch,

and behind the left seat track.

Welded those up,

and ground them down and squirted some primer on for now.
